Whether the assumption of the Nazirite vow is in itself a commendable act was a matter of controversy among the sages. The decision, according to Maimonides, was that it could be commended only if the intention of the person who took the vow was to reform his conduct and to discipline his thoughts, as for example if one had contracted the habit of drinking to excess, or had become conceited because of his physical appearance. Only in circumstances such as these does the Nazirite vow constitute a mode of service to the Lord.* * Hafla’ah, Hilchoth Nedarim XIII, 23
