CHAPTER ONE: THE REGION BEFORE ISLAM


In order for us to understand the impact of Mohammed’s teachings, we need to know a little about pre-Islamic Arabian society. This was not a homogenous society by any means; rather, the area was inhabited by several disparate communities, each with its own customs, practices and religious beliefs. We will begin, therefore, by looking at each of these groups, and we will end this chapter by focusing on Mohammed’s birthplace, the Arabian trading city of Mecca.
