17. Understanding Islam
SECTION SIX: UNDERSTANDING CONVERTS FROM ISLAM
CHAPTER FIFTEEN: ADVICE FOR THE CHURCH

15.5. Avoid special treatment

When someone comes to faith, this is indeed reason for great rejoicing. We may be tempted to consider a conversion from Islam a greater miracle than that of someone from a nominal Christian background, although of course the changing of any heart is a great work of the Lord. There may be thus the tendency to place a new convert on a pedestal, treating him or her as special rather than recognising that as a new Christian they still need encouragement, support and discipling just as believers from any other background. Giving them greater attention may be counter-productive, and may focus more on their personal story than on the ongoing work of Jesus in their life.
