17. Understanding Islam
SECTION SIX: UNDERSTANDING CONVERTS FROM ISLAM
CHAPTER FIFTEEN: ADVICE FOR THE CHURCH

15.6. Follow Scripture not your own ideas

Don’t avoid sticky issues out of a desire to not cause offence or hurt people’s feelings. On the contrary, they need to be dealt with. Some of the problems we face in life are due to our human-centred attitude to life. We quite often think we know how life should work better than God. Just look at the visible Church today. We tend to ignore teachings which may not be socially acceptable, and we may even actively go against them. This might give a licence to a new convert to do likewise, namely rationalise and continue any non-Biblical behaviours they may have brought with them from their past, or ignore teachings which they do not want to accept. The apostle Paul put it this way:

“For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.” (Galatians 5:17)
