SECTION THREE: UNDERSTANDING THE MUSLIM CHRIST
CHAPTER SIX: CHRIST IN ISLAM

6.1. Christ’s miraculous conception

We read in the Qur’an how Mary conceived Jesus through a visit from the angel Jibril (Gabriel):

“And [the example of] Mary, the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient.” (Qur’an 66:12)

Qur’an commentator Ibn Kathir says:

“And We breathed into it (private part) through Our Ruh, meaning, through the angel Jibril. Allah sent the angel Jibril to Maryam, and he came to her in the shape of a man in every respect. Allah commanded him to blow into a gap of her garment and that breath went into her womb through her private part; this is how ‘Isa was conceived.” (Ibn Kathir, Qur’an Commentary on 66:12).
