Part 1 - The 248 Positive Commandments of the Tora

234 - REDEMPTION OF A HEBREW BONDMAID

Exodus 21:8 -- “If she does not please her master, who has betrothed her to himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has dealt deceitfully with her.”

The duty of redeeming a Hebrew bondmaid devolved upon her father. Thus, where the master or the master’s son failed to espouse her, the father was compelled, notwithstanding his poverty, to seek ways and means of redeeming his servant-daughter “lest it be a reflection on his family.”*
