The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 2 - The 365 Prohibitions of the Tora

72 - THE LEVITES AND PRIESTS PERFORMING EACH OTHER'S ALLOTTED SERVICES

Numbers 4:19-20 -- 19 “But do this in regard to them, that they may live and not die when they approach the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and appoint each of them to his service and his task. 20 But they shall not go in to watch while the holy things are being covered, lest they die.”
Numbers 18:3 -- “They shall attend to your needs and all the needs of the tabernacle; but they shall not come near the articles of the sanctuary and the altar, lest they die--they and you also.”

According to Maimonides, a Levite who lost his voice, and therefore could no longer participate in the singing at the services, was permitted to join the group of Levites who attended to the gates in the sanctuary.*

* Mishneh Torah, Abodah, Hilchoth Kle ha-Mikdash III, 8

“Those that ministered in the Temple were strictly forbidden to interfere with each other’s work; for if, in public duties and offices, each one had not his particular task assigned to him, general carelessness and neglect would soon be noticed.”*

* Moreh Nebuchim III, 45
