The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 2 - The 365 Prohibitions of the Tora

73 - ENTERING THE SANCTUARY OR GIVING A DECISION ON ANY LAW OF THE TORAH WHILST INTOXICATED

Leviticus 10:9-11 -- "Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, 10 that you may distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean, 11 and that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them by the hand of Moses."

There are different punishments for contravention of this prohibition. Anyone drunk with wine is forbidden to enter the area between the Porch and Altar, or any part of the Sanctuary itself, and if he does enter, he is liable to punishment by whipping. If he performs the service whilst intoxicated the penalty is death by the hand of Heaven; but it the intoxicant is other than wine, the punishment is whipping only, not death. If, however, anyone, priest or layman, gives decisions while drunk, whether, with wine or any other intoxicant, he transgresses a negative commandment, and is liable to whipping.
