Home -- Content: Series 7 (Laws) -- Translation: English -- Book: 1 (Tora) -- Part: 2 (Negative) -- Prohibition: 284 -- Text The Sharia of Moses in the TORA 284 - APPOINTING AN UNLEARNED JUDGEDeuteronomy 1:17 -- “You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid in any man's presence, for the judgment is God's. The case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.”
This prohibition is directed only to one who has the right to appoint judges in Israel. The Sifre says: “You are not to say: ‘I will appoint so-and-so a judge because he is handsome, or because he is rich, or because he is my relative, or because he has lent me money, or because he knows many languages.’ If you do that, the result will be that he will acquit the guilty and condemn the innocent, not because he is wicked, but because he lacks knowledge. It is for this reason that Scripture says: You shall not show partiality in judgment.”* * Deut. I, 17, Sifre
