305 - BEARING A GRUDGE

Leviticus 19:18 -- “You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.”

In the “Mishneh Torah”, Maimonides explains the reason for this commandment in the following words: “As long as one nurses a grievance and keeps it in mind, he may come to take vengeance. The Torah therefore emphatically warns us not to bear a grudge, so that the impression of wrong shall be quite obliterated and be no longer remembered. This is the right principle, for it alone makes civilized life and social intercourse possible.”*
