308 - CUTTING OR CAUTERIZING SIGNS OF LEPROSY

Deuteronomy 24:8 -- “Take heed in an outbreak of leprosy, that you carefully observe and do according to all that the priests, the Levites, shall teach you; just as I commanded them, so you shall be careful to do.”

The Mishnah says: “A man who plucks out tokens of uncleanness or cauterizes quick flesh transgresses a negative commandment.”*

* Neg. VII, 4 (Sonc. ed. p. 260)

The belief that there is an element of good in all evil happenings is basic to the religious attitude. For this reason we must regard suffering as expiatory in nature, and bear it with patience and resignation. As Maimonides puts it:

“The injunction to love God carries the implication that even in distress we must thank Him and praise Him with joy.”*

* Ahavah, Hilchoth Berachoth X, 3
