309 - PLOWING A VALLY IN WHICH THE RITE OF EGLAH ARUFAH HAS BEEN PERFORMED
Deuteronomy 21:4 -- “The elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a valley with flowing water, which is neither plowed nor sown, and they shall break the heifer's neck there in the valley.”
Declaring that the object of the law concerning “the heifer whose neck is to be broken” is to discover the murderer, Maimonides writes: “Force is added to the law by the rule that the place in which the neck of the heifer is broken should never be cultivated or sown. The owner of the land will therefore use all means to search and to find the murderer, in order that the heifer be not killed and his land be not made useless to him.”*
