070 - JOSEPH and his FAMILY in Bible and Koran

BIBLE (449 verses): Genesis 37:1 to 50:26

KORAN (101 verses): Suras al-Baqara 2:133 -- Yusuf 12:4-103 -- al-Saffaat 37:113

BIBLICAL SAMPLE: Here we choose the passage at the beginning of the account about Joseph's life, where according to Genesis 37:9-11 he foresaw the coming events in a dream “9 Then he (i.e. Joseph) dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, ‘Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.’ 10 But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, ‘What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?’ 11 And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.”
KORANIC SAMPLE: This account about the second dream of Joseph seems to have influenced the following passage in the Koran: Sura Yusuf 12: 4-6 -- “(It was) then (when) Yusuf (Joseph) said to his father, ‘O my father! (Truly) I saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon, I saw them prostrating to me.’ He (his father) said, ‘O my (young) son! Do not tell your vision to your brothers, so that they would conspire against you with a plot. (Truly) Satan is an evident enemy to humans. 6 Thus your Lord (i.e. Allah) will elect you and he will teach you concerning the interpretation of sayings, and he will fulfill his grace upon you and upon the family of Ya'qoub (Jacob), just as he did bring (such grace) upon your (two) fathers beforehand, Ibrahim (Abraham) and Ishaq (Isaac). (Truly) your Lord is knowing, wise.’ ”
