069 - JACOB and his RELATIVES in Bible and Koran
BIBLE (405 verses): Genesis 25:19 to 36:43
KORAN (13 verses): Suras al-Baqara 2:133 -- al-An'am 6:84 -- Hud 11:71 -- Yusuf 12:6, 38 -- Maryam 19:49-50, 58 -- al-Anbiya' 21:72 -- al-'Ankabut 29:27 -- Sad 38:45-47
BIBLICAL SAMPLE: Our choice here is the passage, where God promises Jacob the Land, which he had promised Abraham, in Genesis 28:10-13 -- “10 Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13 And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, ‘I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring.’”
KORANIC SAMPLE: This passage about Jacob from Genesis has left no traces in the Koran. In fact, the Koran hardly furnishes any details about Jacob's life described in Genesis 25-36. Instead we only find general summaries mentioning Jacob such as in Sura Sad 38:45-47 -- “45 And remember our slaves Ibrahim (Abraham) and Ishaq (Isaak) and Ya'qoub (Jacob), who have (effective) hands and insight. 46 (Truly) we (i.e. Allah) have distinguished them with the (admonishing) remembrance of the (otherworldly) mansion. 47 And (truly) they are with us (verily) among the chosen and virtuous ones.”
